Just in case anyone's interested--When HGSS was being released, me and my buddies decided we're go on a Monotype challenge.
The rules?
1. As soon as there is a Pokémon of your type that you can capture, you MUST capture it and ditch your starter. 2. You may not use any other type of Pokémon in battle. 3. You MAY use an HM whore (i.e. Fire-types don't learn Surf, etc.)
That pretty much covers it. I've done a Ground-type run in Soul Silver, starting with the Geodude just below the cliffs northwest of New Bark Town and going from there.
My final team: Sandslash Nidoking Rhyperior Steelix Flygon Quagsire
I've also started a Bug-type run on my Heart Gold, which currently consists only of Butterfree, Ariados, and Paras.
Anyone interested in such a run?

So you are saying that we should choose a type of pokemon, then start the game. When a pokemon of the type appears then I should catch it and then dump every other pokemon unless it's of the same time? (or can we catch pokemon of different types but not use them on our team)
I think I could try that, but of the fourth generation games, I only have Diamond/Pearl, and Soul Silver. My Diamond has over 530 hours logged on it and I am not about to restart it. I have some legendaries on my Soul Silver that I would need to move over to my Diamond before I could restart it. The only game I have left is Pearl.
Could I do it from Pearl?

I did a Monotype Nuzlocke run using Ghost types in LG. You could say that it was pretty scary when my pokemon were near death.

I started a game on Platinum (I forgot I had that, and was looking for my Pearl when I found it), but I only got as far as heading for Sandgem Town. I want to do Bug type but I am cautious because the first bug a trainer meets in Pearl/Diamond/Platinum is a Kricketot which are kind of useless. It might be a case of using Kricketot until I find another bug type and then dump Kricketot.

Question: May I use a Pokemon that isn't the type until later in it's evolution stage. (i.e. Empoleon for a Steel run)

I officially started the challenge (for real this time) today. I started on Platinum and I chose Bug Type. The first Bug Pokemon you encounter in Platinum is a Kricketot. In the past I have hated this pokemon because it always seemed weak. It wasn't until I was forced to use it that I realized how awesome it could be. When it evolved to Kricketune it got Fury Cutter and that move gets more powerful each time it hits. After catching the Kricketot which I named Tick Tock, I went and trained by facing each trainer and random battles in the grass. Tick Tock was a Lvl. 16 when I faced Roark for the Coal Badge.
I got my hit damage up against Roark's Geodude while it pounded on me. I was down to 7 HP, when I beat his Geodude. My Fury Cutter's damage was up so high that I One Hit KO'd Roark's Onix, and One Hit KO'd Roark's Rampardos. After that I went and headed for Eterna City. I'm in the forest next to the city right now. I knew that there were Bug Pokemon in here so I caught a Silcoon, which I named Willow. Right now I am trying to Lvl the Silcoon once so I can get a Beautifly and have a Bug/Flying mix.
Just updating everyone on my Pokemon Challenge.
