Half of my PS2 games were bought from a lot on Ebay. Literally my brother and I put all the money we got for Christmas one year, and looked for a lot that had a lot of games in it that was in our price range. Luckily we won the bid (because we pushed the bid up to our maximum money amount), and got like fifty something games. 80% of them were a type of shooter (which I suck at), 2% were games based on movies (Spiderman, Superman), and the other 18% were games that I still own today like my Madden 08 and my Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. A good 70% of the 80% was sold to Gamestop for store credit, along with that lousy 2% of movie related games.

- Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy - Jak 2 - Jak 3 - Star Wars: Battlefront - Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (these two are good even if you're not a Star Wars fan) - Burnout 3: Takedown - Resident Evil 4 - God of War - God of War 2 - DragonBall Z Infinite World - DragonBall Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 - Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance - Metal Gear Sold 3: Subsistence
Opinions are opinions, but these games are just fucking great.

I'm going to have to second Shadow of the Collossus, the game is fantastic. The atmosphere it has is one of the best, and it's just an enjoyable game to play overall.

The fact that only one person has mentioned Resident Evil 4 makes me disappointed.
.Hack was a blast but it got boring by the third installment. Skip the GU series as they'll just make you miss the old combat style.
No Final Fantasies, for the love of God.
God of War is damn good. God of War 2 is also damn good, if not better.
Shin Megami Tensei games are only good if those sorts of games are up your alley.
Katamari games are so much fun.
Okami is easily the best game for the PS2 you could buy, hands down. Ico, any Tales, and God Hand just PALE in comparison. The only other game that comes close to such magnificence is Shadow of the Colossus.
The Battlefront series is fun, but it won't last for too long in terms of replayability, despite what many others say. It's all kinds of annoying when you can't choose which faction to use...
DBZ games are fun if you have friends. Otherwise, its just aggravating trying to keep up with the game's pace.
Metal Gear Solid 3 is easily the best one in the MGS series, but if you need to choose this or MGS2... please go with the one WITHOUT Raiden.
I don't get the hype about Jak and Daxter. It just seemed kind of like a boring, slightly generic platformer.

No Final Fantasies, for the love of God. They're not that bad... But yeah, I fully endorse Resident Evil 4 as a game choice. I would also recommend the Kingdom Hearts series, as long as you can stomach the Disney crap and the dialogue. "Our hearts are light filled with dark. But light is less scary than darkness so hearts light friendship dark DARK DARK!" Just skip all the cutscenes and you'll be fine.

The Prince of Persia trilogy was good, Sands of Time and Two Thrones more so than Warrior Within, but it had it's moments.
The first four .hack// games, but avoid G.U. like the plague.
I haven't been disappointing by the DBZ Budokai series, but you can just skip all the early ones and stick with Budokai Tenkaichi 3, since it's the last one, has all the plot of the others, and like 400 characters.
God of War isn't too bad, kind of monotonous, but not bad.
And, of course, my favorite, Kingdom Hearts. It takes what little there is good about Final Fantasy (Sorry, I hate turn based games on systems (as opposed to hand helds)), and all that is awesome about Disney, and creates the most perfect fucked up flipper baby ever. 1, Re: CoM, and 2 are all for the PS2.
